LAMBTON BASKETBALL CONTINUES TO GROW ON AND OFF THE COURT

Ever since the New Athletics & Fitness Complex opened at Lambton College, there has been a huge buzz around the community. Attendance has skyrocketed as fans of all ages have been anxious to check out the new facility and exciting basketball games that come with it.

Joe and Colleen Spadafora are coaches and parents of the local youth basketball program HOOPS. We asked them whats it’s like for their kids when they to come to the Lambton Lions Basketball games. Here’s what they had to say:

COLLEEN SPADAFORA:

As a kid I can remember getting Pistons season tickets one year for Christmas. I still remember the feeling of excitement when I met my favourite player. That’s what these games are like for our HOOPs kids. The Lions Men’s team is playing at a level that our kids think they are superstars! I actually had one player ask me, “so coach, after Jason Watts is finished at LC what NBA team will he play for?” I had another kid ask, “Do you think I’m good enough to play for Coach James one day?”

The HOOPS kids see the players’ athleticism when they dunk/drain threes and it gets them excited. As a coach, I’m excited to talk to the kids about their press break or how well they play help-defence. Point is these games, and the new gym, give a positive environment to foster the development of our local players. It provides kids, who genuinely love the game, a safe place to sit back and enjoy talent that in their eyes equivalent to the NBA. To me, as a coach and a parent, I could not ask for anything more.

What makes the experience even more special is how incredible the LC Men’s’ players are off the court. These kids take a lot of pride in making sign for the players. After the games the players stick around and take picture, sign autographs, make up secret handshakes, talk basketball, etc. For the HOOPS kids to have this opportunity to get this close to their idols is something special! By doing this, the LC Men’s’ players are creating a foundation for a genuine love of the game in these boys.

We’ve really enjoyed the experience so far and look forward to more games and hopefully more interactions on and off the court with the LC Men’s team.

The Lambton Men's and Women's Basketball teams appreciate the support and hope to continue to be role models for young ballers for generations to come!
